Texas voters will choose between Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who is seeking a fourth term, and Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Hinojosa would be the state's first Latina governor and the first Democrat to hold the office in more than three decades. If Abbott completes another four-year term, he would become the longest-serving governor in Texas history.

Austin Bussing, an assistant professor of political science at Trinity University, said the central question is affordability and which candidate can bring down the cost of living. Both candidates have focused on that message at rallies in the campaign's final days.

The governor can sign or veto bills, recommend a state budget and make appointments, including the education commissioner. The Texas Legislature, which is likely to stay under Republican control, would play a major role in what either candidate can pass. Abbott supports the school voucher program created in 2025 and says it gives parents more options. Hinojosa opposes vouchers and state takeovers of local school districts, and she has pledged to replace Education Commissioner Mike Morath.
