Scott Dyson said he was working as a door-to-door insurance salesman when he decided he wanted to work in music. The first music store he called, Swords Music in Fort Worth, had an opening, and he took the job in 1987. He later worked for Ape Music, next door, until that store closed in 1995.

Dyson said the Ape Music owner let him take the items that could not be sold in a liquidation and gave him the owner's phone number. He opened Competition Music three days later, in October 1995, on East Lancaster Avenue in Fort Worth.

Dyson said the shop sells used instruments and other equipment, and that many of its customers are repeat buyers. He told the Fort Worth Report the store is now in its 31st year on the street.
