Congressman-elect Johnny Garcia, a San Antonio Democrat, said one of his top priorities after he is sworn in will be working across the aisle to create a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrant workers. He made the remarks on a call with the civic engagement group VotoLatino and said the change is needed for the South Texas economy.

Garcia said some builders and construction workers he has spoken with in South Texas support the Dignity Act, a bipartisan proposal that would provide legal status to migrant workers. He said he is more interested in "providing a real pathway to citizenship, especially here in Texas."

Garcia is a former Bexar County sheriff's deputy who calls himself a "Blue Dog Democrat." On the same call, U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Washington, said Latino voters rejected the Republican Party this week because of what she called the president's broken economic promises and harsh immigration policies.
