A Guatemalan man has been charged with escape or attempt to escape from federal custody after he allegedly broke a window and pried open the metal mesh of a Border Patrol van, then jumped out while it was moving, according to a criminal complaint. The van was carrying a group of people to the Rio Grande City Border Patrol Station.

The complaint identifies the man as Roberto Arnoldo Sanchez-Hernandez, born in 2000. It said Border Patrol agents encountered several people in Escobares on Sept. 24, 2026, who admitted to being in the United States illegally. The transporting agent heard breaking glass from the back of the van, pulled over and found the rear window broken. One person later said someone had broken the window and jumped, the complaint said.

Sanchez-Hernandez was found along the roadside with severe injuries and was taken to South Texas Health System McAllen. He remained hospitalized until Oct. 29, when he was medically cleared. The complaint said a biometric records check showed no prior immigration or criminal history.
