City employees told San Antonio council members that the planned expansion of the Henry B. Convention Center could cost $850 million. That is $100 million more than the previous estimate.
Officials blamed the increase on higher costs for construction materials. The city now proposes splitting the expansion into two phases. The first phase would cost $700 million. The second phase would wait until construction material costs fall.
Council members raised questions about how the larger Sports and Entertainment District would be financed. Ric Galvan asked what the next step would be if financing falls short, and whether the project would collapse, change, or find money from another source. Construction could begin in late 2028 or early 2029.
