Texas State University has given its inaugural Family Choice Awards to local businesses recommended by members of the TXST Family Association. The awards were created by the Office of New Student and Family Experiences to help new students and families find businesses and community resources in San Marcos. Winners were recognized across categories such as dining, auto and transportation, personal care, and pet services.
Association members, which include parents of current and former students, submitted their favorite businesses for each category. The businesses with the most votes in each category were named winners. Among the honorees are The San Market, On Paws Professional Pet Services, K&D's Boutique, Hometown Salon and Jax Burgers and Fries.
Blake Johnson, a Texas State graduate, owns Jax Burgers and Fries. He opened the San Marcos location during his final semester in 2022 and said the award helps the business feel connected to the university. Stephanie Nelson, owner of On Paws, said many of the company's customers and employees have ties to Texas State. Brittany Naylor, assistant director of Transfer and Family Experiences, said the awards connect local businesses with the campus community.
