Texas is running its annual "End the Streak" campaign, which aims to end the daily streak of deaths on the state's roadways. According to TxDOT, Harris County leads the state in DWI fatalities. Traffic crash data from 2022 to 2025 shows alcohol-related fatal crashes fell 28%.
It has been more than 26 years since Texas last had a day without a roadway death. That streak began on Nov. 7, 2000. TxDOT Public Information Officer Danny Perez said the effects of dangerous driving can reach beyond the driver. He said a driver may survive a crash and then cause another one in which someone else dies. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead. People who drink should use a designated driver, a rideshare service or public transportation.
The campaign also stresses pedestrian safety. Maybel Wong said her 73-year-old mother, Shuet Wong, was killed in November 2024 while crossing Houston Street. Wong said her mother was waiting for the walk signal when a truck hit her, just steps from the median. Wong said the driver told her they did not see her mother.
