Latino voters moved toward Democrats in the midterm elections, helping them win in Texas and in battleground U.S. House races across the country, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. The report said the shift was a sharp change for a group that had moved toward President Donald Trump two years earlier.
According to The AP Voter Poll, about one-third of Hispanic voters backed the Republican in their local U.S. House race, while roughly 4 in 10 voted for Trump in 2024. In Texas, voters flipped a Senate seat and the governor's office to Democrats, along with every statewide office on the ballot. Every county in Texas voted more Democratic than it did in 2024.
Democratic Rep. Gabe Vasquez, who won his New Mexico district by about 17 percentage points, said, "We showed our power and flexed our muscle during this election." Johnny Garcia, a sheriff's deputy who won a newly created House district near San Antonio, said, "The only way we did that is by going after the issues that were meaning the most to people."
