The Texas General Land Office said Herman Reese received the key to his rebuilt home in Coldspring on Thursday. He is the third of three brothers whose homes were rebuilt through the GLO's Homeowner Assistance Program. His brothers, Leon Reese and Arthur Reese, received keys to their new homes earlier this year. The three brothers live on the same street in Coldspring.
Hurricane Beryl severely damaged all three homes in 2024, and each brother applied to the program for help rebuilding. The GLO said the new homes are energy efficient, built to be resilient to disasters and include accessibility features. Family members said they were relieved and happy that each brother will be safe in his new home.
GLO Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., said disaster recovery "can change the trajectory of an entire family." Homeowners may apply for only one program, either reimbursement or repair and reconstruction assistance, and the programs cover only a primary residence. Applications are reviewed first-come, first-served. San Jacinto County is among the eligible counties.
