In El Cenizo, Mayor Carina Hernandez won another term with 321 votes to 211 over challenger Juany "Jannie" Gomez, according to unofficial results Tuesday. In Rio Bravo, Mayor Amanda Perez Aguero ran unopposed with 565 votes. Aguero said it is the city's first uncontested mayoral race in a long time. Results remain unofficial until local officials canvass them.
Hernandez said street improvements through Webb County are her top priority, with work possibly starting within four weeks. Planned projects include paving Rosales Street, which she said floods when it rains, and building a community plaza at the city entrance and a park near the town's only elementary school. She said the city council must still decide which projects come first and wants community input before finalizing plans. She said securing ambulance service is an ongoing challenge, and the volunteer-based fire department is also a concern.
Aguero said transparency is a central goal, saying residents have a right to know where their money goes. She said the city cannot afford a grant writer, so she plans to write grants herself. Her infrastructure priorities include finishing paving on the remaining streets, and she said the fire department needs significant work. Aguero cited budget constraints as a reason the city cannot currently plan to bring a dedicated municipal ambulance.
