The Chambers County Museum at Wallisville held its annual Heritage Day on Saturday, Oct. 31, honoring "Those Behind the Badge." The museum opened a new exhibit on the history of the Chambers County Sheriff's Office. Museum board Director Roy "Kim" Kimbell Turner said the event paid tribute to law enforcement officers past and present.
The exhibit recognizes Sheriff John Frost, the first Chambers County sheriff killed in the line of duty. It also honors Sheriff Louis Otter, the longest-serving sheriff, and Herman Rivers, the longest-serving deputy sheriff. The sheriff's office K-9 program and several other figures in the agency's history are also included.
Texas Sen. Mayes Middleton and Texas Rep. Terri Leo Wilson brought a resolution honoring the office's 168 years of history. Middleton said he was proud to honor the department's long record. Sheriff Brian Hawthorne gave special recognition to Otter and said he and Otter both served as board president of the Sheriff's Association of Texas.
