An off-duty sergeant with the Webb County Constable's Office Precinct 1 was arrested early Sunday after allegedly assaulting two people and resisting officers outside a north Laredo nightclub, according to police. Roel Lara, 33, was booked and charged with two counts of assault and one count of resisting arrest. All three are Class A misdemeanors.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Nov. 1 in the 6500 block of Arena Boulevard. Laredo police officers were helping with crowd dispersal as patrons left the nightclub when venue security guards flagged them down about an alleged disturbance involving a male patron, later identified as Lara. Police said Lara appeared intoxicated and allegedly resisted when officers tried to detain him for questioning. A preliminary investigation found that Lara allegedly made inappropriate physical contact with a woman. Police said that when a bystander intervened, Lara began biting both people. Responding officers reported visible bite marks on both victims.

Webb County Constable Precinct 1 Guadalupe Gomez said the office is aware of the arrest. In a statement, Gomez said the office takes matters of this nature seriously and expects its personnel to maintain professionalism at all times. The statement said no member of the office is exempt from professional standards or above the law.
