A $500,000 budget buys different kinds of homes across Houston, according to the Houston Chronicle. In the Heights, it typically buys a roughly 1,000-square-foot bungalow near restaurants and Inner Loop conveniences. In Cypress South, it can buy a newly built home nearly twice that size, with a commute of about 45 minutes to downtown on weekday mornings.

The Chronicle used Houston Association of Realtors data to look at homes priced from $490,000 to $550,000. Buyers in that range are paying about 17% more than the metro median, the newspaper reported. It selected listings meant to reflect typical homes in that price range, favoring properties outside the floodplain and zoned to well-rated schools when possible.

In the Medical Center Area, the Chronicle said, a $500,000 home often means townhome-style living. Many homes near the Texas Medical Center are zoned to schools rated B by the Texas Education Agency, but the main public middle school serving the area, Cullen Middle, is rated C as of 2026.
