Several Spearman High School students spoke during the public comment portion of the May 5 regular meeting of the Spearman ISD Board of Trustees. They discussed academic priorities, extracurricular programs and school culture. District officials did not respond directly during the meeting, consistent with Texas Open Meetings Act procedures that limit discussion of items not on the agenda.

The students raised concerns about the visibility and support of UIL academics, fine arts and agricultural programs. They also spoke about staffing patterns and course availability in core academic areas. Several said they valued athletics and coaches but wanted other programs to receive similar recognition and support. The students said their goal was to encourage improvement, not to criticize individuals.

Superintendent James Layman, speaking on behalf of the Board of Trustees, said the students' decision to speak publicly "took courage." He said their comments would be reviewed by district and campus leadership and that the district would continue discussion with staff. The Hansford County Reporter-Statesman reported that athletics in Spearman has an established parent-led booster organization, while fine arts and academic activities do not have a comparable structure. The students acknowledged they did not first use the district's formal grievance process.
