The Amarillo Police Department has released a list of Halloween safety tips for people planning to celebrate. The department urged vigilance and common sense, and told people to throw away any unwrapped, damaged or suspicious candy. APD posted the tips on its social media pages and said its DWI Unit will be looking for impaired drivers.
For trick-or-treaters and families, APD advised wearing reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight or glow sticks. It said face paint is a better choice when possible, because masks can block a child's vision. Young children should be accompanied by a responsible adult, and families should stick to sidewalks and crosswalks. Children should know a parent's phone number and a meeting place in case they get separated. Treats should be checked before children eat them.
APD asked drivers to expect more pedestrians, especially children, in residential neighborhoods. Drivers should slow down, put their phones away and wear seatbelts. The department said alcohol, marijuana and other impairing substances can affect reaction time and judgment, and that impaired people should not drive. Adults heading out were advised to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, arranging a ride service or finding another safe way home.
