A man who spent more than 26 years as a fugitive has been extradited from Nicaragua to Galveston County, authorities said. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office identified him as Roberto Moran Perez.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Perez was convicted in 2000 of aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child. He received sentences of 16 years and 10 years but fled before sentencing. He was extradited on Oct. 28 after an international effort that included an INTERPOL Red Notice.

Perez is being held in the Galveston County Jail pending transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The Sheriff's Office said the case involved the Galveston County District Attorney's Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of State.
