NBC 5 Investigates mapped DFW-area data center projects that are under construction or in planning, using data from two companies that track data center development, Cleanview and Datacenter Map. The maps show much of the activity in three communities south of downtown Dallas: Lancaster, Red Oak and Wilmer. The area runs along Interstate 35 and then east toward Interstate 45.

According to the station's mapping, Red Oak has nine data centers operating and 14 more in planning or under construction. Lancaster has three under construction and 11 in the pipeline. Wilmer has 11 new projects planned alongside one existing data center.

Development experts said the growth in the region is driven largely by access to power and fiber connections. Some believe the area's growing appeal to developers could make Dallas the anchor of a Texas market with more data centers than any other state.
