Austin police are investigating a shooting that injured one person on Sixth Street during Halloween weekend. The Austin Police Department said the shooting happened at the Voodoo Room on East Sixth Street around 1:37 a.m. Sunday. Police could not say whether it happened before or after the clocks changed for the end of daylight saving time.
Officers responded after reports that two people may have been shot. Police said they found one person with a gunshot wound to a lower extremity. Paramedics took the person to a hospital. Police said the injury did not appear to be serious. The case is being investigated as an aggravated assault, and no suspects have been arrested.
The shooting happened as public safety agencies increased staffing for major downtown events, including Halloween weekend and a University of Texas football game. Police estimated the game would draw 80,000 to 100,000 people downtown. Officers said they increased patrols and overtime staffing, working under a unified command that included police, EMS and fire. The investigation remains ongoing.
