A new study by home security company Vivint found San Antonio has 56 purportedly haunted places. That is second only to Los Angeles, which has 61. Austin has 21.
The study counted 27 reported ghost sightings in San Antonio, less than a quarter of the 115 in Austin. Austin had the most sightings of any city in the study. San Antonio ranked 11th on the study's Spookiness Index, and Austin ranked eighth. Austin, Dallas and Houston took the top three spots in the sightings category.
Researchers used seven factors, including sightings, haunted places, haunted house attractions, paranormal-themed businesses and "spooky" Google searches. Vivint used September data and combined the measures into one score. San Antonio had the study's second-lowest concentration of psychics and astrologers, at 0.73 per 10,000 residents. It also had 163 "spooky" Google searches per 10,000 residents, the lowest of the four Texas cities in the study's top 20.
