Anthony Glenn Morgan, 62, died after a medical emergency inside the Harrison County Jail on Oct. 23, according to a state report. The report said he was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m. at a hospital in Marshall. The medical cause of death is believed to be cardiac arrest, but a final autopsy result is pending.
Morgan was booked into the jail on Oct. 21 at 10:20 a.m. The report said he was held on a parole violation and a probation violation on a Louisiana charge of possession of a controlled substance. It said he had medical problems when he entered, was treated for a pre-existing condition after admission, and did not display or use weapons, resist arrest or attempt to harm others.
According to the report, a deputy found no pulse on Morgan in a detox housing unit and began chest compressions while dispatch called for emergency medical services. Jail medical staff used a defibrillator, which indicated no shock was needed, so staff continued CPR. Jail staff rotated compressions until Marshall Fire Department EMS personnel arrived. EMS crews took over advanced life support and transported Morgan to a hospital, where he later died, the report said.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the death in accordance with state protocol.
