Formosa Plastics reported a fire at its Point Comfort facility at about 4 a.m. Wednesday. The fire involved a polyethylene unit and its associated product storage silos, the company said.

Formosa said its safety mechanisms worked as intended and contained the incident, and its emergency response team responded. No employees were injured, and the company said it saw no sign of off-site environmental impact. The company is assessing the affected unit and communicating with state and federal agencies as an investigation continues.

Point Comfort resident Jessica Rodriguez said she heard a loud bang early Wednesday and did not know at first what it was. Formosa has not released details on the cause, the extent of any damage or whether operations at the unit have been disrupted.
