The Victoria West Lady Warriors (28-14, 10-2) ended their regular season with a four-set win at Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial on Friday, 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 25-13. On Monday, they beat Cuero in a playoff warmup, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17.
West, the second-place team in District 29-5A, will play Mission Veterans Memorial (26-8, 9-5), the third-place team in District 30-5A, in the bi-district round of the UIL 5A D2 Texas Volleyball State Championships. The match is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. at Corpus Christi King High. Head coach Garrett Gomez said Mission is a very good defensive team.
Gomez said he scheduled many difficult non-district opponents to prepare the team for the postseason. He said he believes that experience will help West play at a higher level. Senior setter Morgan Ulbrich has recorded double-digit assist totals, and Gomez said several hitters, including Kristin Kohutek, Peyton Rehak, Rylee Marbach and Kensey Merritt, can each finish with double-digit kills.
