Austin voters rejected Proposition I, a measure that would have required an outside audit of the city's spending. Travis County's unofficial results show 56.02 percent voting against the measure and 43.98 percent voting for it.
If passed, the measure would have amended the city charter to require an outside audit of city spending every five years. It also would have required the city to complete such an audit before any future tax rate election. The city council approved a record $6.6 billion budget in August 2026, a nearly 5 percent increase from 2025's record $6.3 billion. A similar audit effort failed in 2018, when Austin's budget was $4.1 billion.
Austin holds the highest credit rating available from Moody's, S&P Global and Fitch Ratings. In the city council races, candidates won outright in Districts 8 and 9. Districts 1, 3 and 5 will hold runoffs.
