Democrat Bobby Pulido, a Tejano music singer, defeated Republican incumbent Monica De La Cruz in Congressional District 15, according to News 4 San Antonio. The district runs from San Antonio's Southeast Side through parts of Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Democrats recruited Pulido, a Latin Grammy winner, to run in the newly redrawn district. The report said he kept performing during the campaign, including at quinceañeras, while traveling across South Texas to meet voters. The race was part of a wave of Democratic wins across Texas.
After the win, Pulido said immigration reform is needed now because it is tied to the region's economy. He said the issue requires a bipartisan solution and that he is willing to work across party lines.
