Federal prosecutors charged David Dashaun Yancy with possessing a firearm or ammunition as a convicted felon, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday, November 5. Dallas police filed seven aggravated assault counts against him. Both cases relate to shootings on November 1 in Deep Ellum that wounded seven people. Authorities described the gunshot wounds as non-life-threatening.
Yancy surrendered to Dallas police on November 4, according to the federal complaint and a police update. Investigators allege that surveillance video shows him removing a handgun, appearing to rack the slide and firing toward people in the crowded entertainment district. Prosecutors said witness interviews, tips and video review led detectives to identify him. The complaint contains allegations, not findings of guilt.
Dallas police logged three shootings between about 12:20 a.m. and 1:35 a.m. on November 1, counting four deaths and 15 injuries across the three scenes. Authorities have not charged Yancy in the separate shootings that killed four people elsewhere in Deep Ellum that morning.
If convicted on the federal charge, Yancy faces up to 15 years in prison, prosecutors said. The charges followed the November 2 launch of Operation Deep Cover, a coordinated federal, state and local effort focused on violent crime and illegal firearms in Dallas entertainment and commercial districts.
