Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa said Thursday, Nov. 5, that the search for a new Texas Education Commissioner to replace Mike Morath is already underway. Speaking at a news conference in Austin, she said, "We are actively interviewing people for that position." Her remarks also signaled possible changes to the state's school voucher program.
Hinojosa said she would work with lawmakers from both parties. "The people of Texas have spoken," she said, adding that they want change. She said she hopes elected leaders from both parties will not stand in the way of progress.
Her comments follow an education plan she campaigned on. In an August post on X, Hinojosa said that as governor she would make teachers among the highest paid in the nation, replace Morath with an educator, and end the STAAR test.
