An inmate at the Stiles Unit was found unresponsive in his cell around 11 p.m. on Oct. 17, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said. The inmate, Christopher Mireles, was pronounced dead at 11:59 p.m.

Staff began life-saving measures, and emergency medical services arrived and continued them, according to the agency. The Office of Inspector General is investigating the death.

Amanda Hernandez, director of communications for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said no signs of foul play are suspected at this time. Mireles had served nine years of an 18-year sentence for aggravated robbery and burglary out of Montgomery County.
