Brownsville City Manager Alan Guard has selected Angel L. Figueroa Jr. as the next chief of the Brownsville Police Department. Figueroa will officially start on December 14, 2026, according to the city.

Figueroa has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience with the New York City Police Department. He is currently a deputy chief and executive officer for patrol in Manhattan South, where he oversees about 2,500 personnel. His past assignments include commanding the NYPD Police Academy and serving in its Professional Standards Bureau. The city said he was the first Hispanic commanding officer of the NYPD's Times Square Unit, 1st Precinct and 13th Precinct.

Guard said Brownsville is growing and that public safety services must keep pace with residents' needs. Figueroa said his priority is to listen, learn and build relationships with residents, local leaders and public safety partners.
