Panola College will mark Veterans Day with a Lunch Box Lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the Frances B. Ross Ballroom inside the Charles C. Matthews Foundation Student Center. Dr. Laura Tohe, the daughter of one of the original Navajo Code Talkers, will present "From 'Chief' to Code Talker: Four Profiles of the Navajo Code Talkers."
The college said the talk will cover four Navajo Code Talkers who served in World War II. According to the college, the young Navajo men who enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps were later asked to develop a secret military code using their native language.
Penni Ratley, Director of Library Services at Panola College, said the event offers students, employees and community members a chance to hear the personal stories behind an important part of American history. In conjunction with the lecture, the college will partner with Pippen Motor Company and EAG Dodge Carthage on a food drive. Donations will benefit local veterans' organizations and the Panola Pantry on campus.
