The Fort Bend County judge's office has been in the spotlight this year. In March, former County Judge KP George was convicted of felony money laundering. About a month later, Republican nominee Daniel Wong was sworn in as acting county judge. The county attorney's office has filed legal challenges disputing Wong's appointment, and commissioners court has seen partisan clashes and other lawsuits.
Republican interim County Judge Daniel Wong is a former Sugar Land city council member and the CEO of an engineering firm. His campaign did not respond to requests for an interview. At an early October candidate debate, Wong said he was "thrown in this job" unexpectedly on April 10. He said he plans to interview all 80 county departments and that the county "has money" but also "wastes a lot of money." Wong said he proposed a tax rate reduction, which passed commissioners court before the 2027 fiscal year budget.
Democratic Commissioner Dexter McCoy represents an area that includes parts of Richmond, Sugar Land and Mission Bend. He was first elected in 2023. Before running in Fort Bend, McCoy served as an aide to the U.S. Secretary of Education during the Obama administration. McCoy said he is the only candidate with both federal and local government experience.
