Democrat Gina Hinojosa was elected as Texas' first Latina governor, and Vikki Goodwin was elected as the state's first female lieutenant governor, according to the report. Democrats also won enough House seats to secure the speaker's naming rights.

On Friday, state Rep. Senfronia Thompson announced she had the votes to become House speaker when the Legislature convenes in January. That would be the first Democratic House majority since 2003. If her coalition holds, Texas would have its first all-female "Big Three" of governor, lieutenant governor and House speaker. Two women have served as governor, but no woman has held the other two posts.

State Rep. Christina Morales, a Houston Democrat, said it was past time for women to lead in Texas. "Look at these women's records," she said. "You can see that they are qualified and now they're going to be in charge of Texas."
