The city of New Braunfels has opened a series of natural-surface trails at Northwest Park, a park of more than 140 acres that the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation bought in 2024. The city says it is now its largest public park. City Council recently approved a lease for the property, which allows for about 3.1 miles of trails, along with minor parking improvements, portable restrooms and a primary trailhead.

The first trails are rated low difficulty. They pass through woodlands, grasslands, thickets of honey mesquite and stretches of historic jeep roads. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The primary trailhead is at 965 Conrads Lane. The city has added trail markers and wayfinding signs.

New Braunfels Parks & Recreation Director Ken Wilson said the opening is the first of many planned improvements. He said the New Braunfels Parks Foundation donated 15 acres of land and helped pay for signs and trail construction. Wilson said volunteers with the Comal Trails Alliance will help improve the trails. A kiosk at the trailhead shows planned links to Sunflower Ridge Park and the Alligator Creek West Loop. The city said the connected system will offer about 5 miles of paved and unpaved trails once complete. A master plan for the park will be presented to City Council in the coming weeks.
