The Rio Grande Valley chapter of the American Federation of Teachers held a screening of the documentary The Long Game at the Cine El Rey theater in McAllen on October 26, 2026. The film, which the event described as an investigative documentary, traces the origins of the Texas education privatization movement from the 1970s to today.
Before the screening, a panel of educators and filmmaker Sharon Ferranti discussed the film, public education in Texas and the 2026 midterm elections. Panelists included Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers at the national level.
Ahead of the midterms, the American Federation of Teachers helped draft a letter signed by educators and sent to Texas legislators. The letter says educators pay for classroom supplies and student needs out of their own pockets. It also says underfunding of public schools has real consequences, and it calls for schools to be funded and staffed at adequate levels.
