The Edna Cowboys beat the Wharton Tigers 42-14 on Friday night at Cowboy Memorial Stadium. Edna scored 33 straight points through the first two quarters before Wharton scored. Edna has won two straight games since a loss to Columbus two weeks ago, and has outscored Palacios and Wharton 90-14 in that span.
Several early scoring chances were taken off the board. Edna's first drive ended in a fumble recovered by Wharton in the end zone. A touchdown on an interception by senior Ja'Dale Barnes was negated by a penalty. Senior Maverick Robertson ran in from 15 yards for the first score, and sophomore Malik Tilmon later scored on a run. Edna's rushing attack finished with five touchdowns, three of them by Robertson. The Cowboys gained 223 yards on offense.
The Edna defense allowed two long touchdown passes and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions and a strip-sack fumble recovery. Robertson said the team is preparing for the playoffs, with two regular-season games left. "We've got to go and take care of business every week," he said.
