The Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) is encouraging men in the community to take a more active role in their physical and mental health during November, which is Men's Health Awareness Month. The district said the focus includes preventive medical exams, early detection and seeking professional help when needed.
The campaign, which is commonly linked to Movember, covers prostate cancer, testicular cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression and suicide prevention. MCHD Chief Executive Officer Nestor Bonilla said men should make their health a priority rather than waiting until problems become serious. Bonilla said regular checkups and early detection help protect men and their families.
The district said high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can develop without noticeable symptoms, so routine medical evaluations are important. Men are encouraged to talk with their healthcare providers about their personal risk factors for prostate cancer and other conditions. The campaign also places emphasis on mental health. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Elias Diaz, a public health advocate, also spoke on the topic.
