Three shootings in Deep Ellum, a Dallas nightlife district, left four people dead and about 15 injured on Halloween night, police said. The gunfire happened within a 75-minute span. The first shooting was reported around 12:20 a.m. Sunday in the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second was reported at about 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street, and a third at roughly 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office identified 21-year-old Kaniesa Scott and 28-year-old Unique Elise Benjamin as victims. The family of 25-year-old Anthony McCleary identified him. Dallas police Chief Daniel Comeaux said the injury count is still changing, because several victims took themselves to local hospitals. Comeaux said officers positioned less than two blocks away ran toward the gunfire and gave life-saving aid, reviving at least one victim.
On Monday, U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould announced Operation Deep Cover, a safety initiative that will bring federal help to policing Deep Ellum. Raybould said it adds federal resources, including uniformed and plainclothes officers. Federal authorities will also review Dallas police cases from Deep Ellum going back to 2024.
