The Bedford City Council amended the city's municipal code at its Oct. 13 meeting to add six stop signs along Harwood Terrace and a seventh at Oak Cove Lane and Edgewater Drive. Mayor Dan Cogan confirmed the signs will be placed on the side streets entering Harwood Terrace, not on Harwood Terrace itself. The six Harwood Terrace locations feed into Harwood at Harber Drive, Stephenson Drive, Spring Valley Drive, Spring Grove Drive, Shady Brook Drive and Berwick Lane.

City Manager Andrea Roy said staff reviewed all stop-controlled intersections in the city before bringing the proposal forward. Roy said there is no financial impact because the city has the needed materials in stock. Staff plan to review the stop sign list on an ongoing basis, likely once a year.

Council members asked whether residents on affected streets would be notified by door hangers. Staff said no such outreach was planned, because stop compliance at these locations is largely already implied by traffic law. The item passed unanimously as part of the consent agenda. The ordinance also replaces a stop sign at Phyllis Street and Ravenswood Drive that went missing, likely during nearby construction, and was never formally replaced.
