Fort Worth ISD is planning to renovate the former De Zavala Elementary building in the Fairmount area. Daggett Montessori, a kindergarten through eighth-grade school, moved into the building in May. The building was built in the early 1900s.
The district's proposal, introduced at the Historic and Cultural Landmarks Commission's Oct. 12 meeting, includes new windows, a new roof and two small additions. The district asked for approval to remove nonhistoric windows and install new ones. Karl Crawley, a district representative, said the design is not final. He said the outside of the windows would have an aluminum finish for durability and maintenance, and the inside would have a wood finish.
Commissioners moved the case to November because the window plans lacked details. Barbara Crotty of the Fairmount Neighborhood Association said the group wants to take part in the project. She said the community wants the work to protect the original building. Commission chair Rick Herring said older buildings need a careful approach. He said he was not sure the school district always believes it must follow the rules.
