Brown County Judge Alan Shane Britton has signed an agreement to resign and accept a permanent ban from judicial service in Texas, according to a document filed with the State Commission on Judicial Conduct. The agreement was signed Oct. 21. It resolves disciplinary matters without further proceedings, and the commission would take no further disciplinary action on those matters once it approves the agreement. If approved, Britton would be disqualified from serving as a judge or performing judicial duties in Texas.

The agreement says complaints filed in 2024 alleged Britton used his judicial office to protect people from criminal warrants in cases before his court while representing them as an attorney in divorce cases. A November 2025 complaint alleged he acted as an attorney while representing his wife in their divorce case in Brown County.

A Brown County grand jury indicted Britton in November 2025 on charges including abuse of official capacity, hindering apprehension or prosecution, tampering with a government document, assault on a public servant and tampering with a witness. The agreement also references an indictment involving a family-violence allegation. According to the document, Britton was suspended without pay on Nov. 25, 2025, after the indictments. The agreement states that the commission has made no findings of fact or conclusions of law on the allegations.
