State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, a Houston Democrat, said Friday that she has secured pledges from a majority of the Texas House's 150 members. Thompson said that would effectively position her to become the next Speaker of the House. Democrats won control of the chamber for the first time in more than two decades, and the party is poised to hold about 83 seats after Tuesday's election. The new majority takes office in January.

Thompson, who has served in the House since 1973, will be 88 when the 90th Legislative Session convenes. State Rep. Eddie Morales of Eagle Pass entered the speaker's race Thursday, withdrew, and backed Thompson on Friday. Republican Reps. Todd Hunter, Charlie Geren and Drew Darby attended Thompson's press conference. A full list of supporters was not released. Thompson said she plans to appoint members of both parties to chair committees.

Some Republicans have said they will not support her. Rep. Andy Hopper of Decatur posted on X that no Republican should consider voting for a Democratic speaker. Rep. Brent Money of Greenville also said he would not support Thompson.
