Fort Worth ISD is discussing how Gina Hinojosa's election as Texas governor could affect the district. Hinojosa said in a speech after her win on Tuesday night that she plans to end state takeovers of school districts. Fort Worth ISD went through a state takeover in March.
Hinojosa said she intends to fire Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath on the day she takes office. She will be sworn in on Jan. 19, 2027. She also said she plans to end no-bid contracts and redirect funds toward teacher pay.
Hinojosa has criticized the private school voucher program, which was enacted under Gov. Greg Abbott's administration. Under the program, public funds help families pay for private education. Critics have said it mainly benefits wealthier families. Hinojosa has also said she wants to end the STARR test, which she calls flawed.
Under the takeover, the district's elected board members were replaced by a state-appointed board led by superintendent Dr. Peter Licata. Hinojosa is just over two months from taking office.
