The Stephens County Jail passed an unannounced inspection last week, according to County Judge Will Thompson. He reported the results at the commissioners court meeting on Monday, Oct. 26. Thompson said the inspection led to only one minor notation, about how paperwork is filed for incarcerated veterans. He praised Sheriff Kevin Roach and his staff, saying the inspection was clean. Thompson also said the county airport was inspected last week. Commissioners are waiting for more information before discussing the findings and any follow-up.
At the same meeting, commissioners heard a presentation on whether a nursing home could be developed to serve Stephens County and nearby communities. Andrew Buchok, a representative of Avir Health Group, presented the information. He said an estimated 2,300 county residents over age 65 could benefit from rehabilitation and long-term care services. Medicare and Medicaid data discussed in the presentation showed the county's existing nursing home averages about 33 residents.
