A house fire near Northeast 16th Avenue and North Marrs Street in Amarillo left three pets dead and two people displaced, the Amarillo Fire Department said. Crews were called just before 6 p.m. Thursday and found a single-story house with heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the home and its windows.
Officials said no human injuries were reported. Two dogs and a cat were found dead inside. The American Red Cross is helping the two displaced residents with temporary housing. Officials said the house suffered heavy damage, and the total estimated damage has not been determined.
The Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire started in a bedroom near an electrical outlet. Investigators could not determine the ignition source. The fire department encourages residents to regularly check electrical cords, outlets and appliances for signs of damage or overheating.
