San Angelo leaders are beginning work on a new community plan meant to guide how the city grows and develops in the coming years. On Oct. 27, the City Council held a community plan meeting with the Planning Commission, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Development Corporation to discuss future growth decisions.
Aaron Vannoy, director of planning and development services for the city of San Angelo, said the effort will review current city activities and include community engagement. He said the review will cover economic development, parks and recreation centers, housing, and infrastructure and the capital improvement program.
City officials said it has been more than 20 years since San Angelo last carried out a community-wide planning effort of this scale. Vannoy said changes across Texas since COVID-19, along with the city's location in West Texas, are driving the need to plan for possible growth in industry and housing. He said the city wants to grow in a fiscally responsible way.
City officials said the plan is meant to build on what already defines San Angelo while preparing for what comes next. A community launch party is scheduled for Oct. 29.
