The Howard County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an active phone scam. According to the office, callers pose as law enforcement officers and falsely say people missed jury duty. Scammers are using technology that makes the calls appear to come from a real Sheriff's Office telephone number.

The callers tell residents they did not respond to a jury summons issued through the Howard County District Clerk's Office. Authorities said the Sheriff's Office does not contact residents by telephone about missed jury summonses.

Officials urge anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and not give out personal or financial information. The Sheriff's Office said a caller ID showing a legitimate law enforcement number does not necessarily mean the call is genuine.
