Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Wednesday, according to the story. The filing lists more than $3 million in debt, and a significant portion is tied to pending civil lawsuits.
The lawsuits come from a March 2024 crash on Highway 75 in Dallas involving six vehicles. Police said Rice was driving more than 100 mph before the crash. Multiple victims have filed suits seeking damages. The filings also show that part of Rice's wages is already being garnished to pay some victims.
Donald Hood, a bankruptcy attorney not involved in the case, said it remains unclear whether Rice will qualify for Chapter 7. Hood said creditors may request a 2004 examination of the debtor. Hood also said victims could receive some money from the liquidation of Rice's assets, but probably far less than their claims.
