Construction is continuing on the renovation of the Pampa Youth & Community Center. Board President Dr. Jay Johnson said the footings and most of the plumbing are in place, the pool floor has been poured, and crews are framing the walls. He said the expanded facility will cover about 29,000 square feet, roughly 5,000 square feet more than the current building.
Johnson said the new pool will be about 60% larger than the current one, with a toddler area and six lanes instead of four. He said the pool will be about 45 feet wide and 75 feet long, a size suited to swim meets. The high school swim team will be able to use the pool.
Johnson also described a climbing wall with six belays and a tallest section of about 22 feet. The new facility will add a steam room, with one sauna and one steam room in the men's and women's sections. Johnson said the center will not include hot tubs or racquetball courts, citing maintenance needs and changing interest in activities.
