Five new Democrats appear to have won seats on the Texas State Board of Education, according to unofficial returns reported by The Texas Tribune. If the results hold, Democrats would hold their first majority on the board since 1994.

In District 8, Democrat Dana Van de Walker leads Republican incumbent Audrey Young by fewer than 600 votes, with about 1% of the vote still uncounted. Walker wrote in a Facebook post that she is confident voters made their intentions known, while noting the race will not be official until votes are certified. Young said Thursday morning that she has not conceded.

It is unclear when final results will be available, since provisional and mail-in ballots are still pending. A candidate can request a recount in close elections. Excluding the District 8 race, Democrats and Republicans each hold seven of the board's 15 seats.
