Laredo police told the city's Suicide Prevention Committee that 15 deaths have been recorded so far this year. Police said that matches the total for all of 2021 and that the city is nearing last year's total of 18. Officers said 11 of the 13 suicide attempts and deaths reported in October involved people under 30. Health advocates said catching warning signs in schools is critical. Julie Bazan, executive director of the Area Health Education Center, said school district directors should be notified when a school-aged child is at risk so they can intervene. Advocates want districts alerted right away when a student is in crisis, so counselors can support siblings on other campuses. Help is free and confidential. People can call or text 988 at any time.
