The Sunray Bobcats lost to the New Deal Lions 56-12 on Friday, Oct. 2, during Sunray's homecoming game. New Deal scored three first-quarter touchdowns to lead 21-0.

Sunray scored with 7:11 left in the first half on a pass from Angel Vargas to Zeke Grajeda. The extra point was no good. New Deal added another score with 27 seconds left in the half and led 28-6 at halftime. The Lions scored 28 more points in the second half. Grajeda, who replaced the injured Vargas, threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Owen Purl in the middle of the fourth quarter, and the extra-point attempt failed. Grajeda finished 2-of-5 for 70 yards and a touchdown pass, and he also caught a touchdown.

Head coach Matthew Clemens said the loss was "pretty frustrating" and that the team "took a big step backwards" after its previous two games. He said the team will focus on the basics on both sides of the ball before district play. Sunray opens district play at home against Panhandle on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
